Floods devastate over 2,500 acres of farmland in Shekhan, Tandiyanwala

Chiniot/Lalian – A second wave of floods from the River Chenab within a week has wreaked havoc in Union Council Kalri, destroying thousands of acres of farmland and displacing hundreds of families in villages including Shekhan, Tandiyanwala, Randi Kho, Chohni, Gulabewala, Jhlarantho Shah, Thatta Shah Jamal, Tibi Lalehra, Ahmadwala, Maro Bhattian, Maro Qila and Kalri.

According to local headman Irshad Hasan Shah, Shekhan spans 3,187 acres, of which nearly 2,500 acres now lie under floodwater. Crops of rice, maize, and sesame have been wiped out, with farmers losing investments of at least Rs100,000 per acre. Fodder stocks, hay, and mud houses have also been severely damaged.

In Jhlarantho Shah alone, hundreds of acres of farmland were inundated and dozens of mud houses collapsed. In Tandiyanwala, hundreds of land under rice and fodder cultivation were destroyed.

Local elders, including Syed Irshad Hussain, have urged the government to conduct a comprehensive damage survey and ensure compensation for affected farmers. Residents have appealed to Deputy Commissioner Chiniot Safiullah Gondal and Commissioner Faisalabad for urgent action.

Meanwhile, at the local level, Nasreen Dad Trust, along with other welfare orgs is providing emergency relief. Despite these efforts, much more support is required to meet the scale of destruction.
